Iron Mountain Park in Georgia
First and foremost, I am not getting paid to post about Iron Mountain nor do I have any affiliation with the park.
Last month, my family and I decided to take a camping trip. We made the 10 hour drive up to Iron Mountain Park in Dahlonega, just North of Atlanta, Georgia. Towed both of our SXS and rented one of their family cabins for a 5 day, 4 night stay. We had a blast!
The Basics
First thing’s first! I’m sure you want the basics of the park! Iron Mountain sits on 4,300 privately owned acres. There is one main paved road leading in and out of the park and 150+ trails and scenic routes within the park. There is also a drag strip and several tracks for different riding skill levels. Iron Mountain is open 365 days of the year and allows ATVs, SXS/UTVs, dirt bikes, and jeeps to ride. Most of their trails are marked with posts letting you know the recommended vehicles for that trail (see below photo). The park also has a stage, a restaurant and bar, store, and SXS/UTV rentals for a hefty deposit. I should mention that the restaurant is only open Friday-Sunday.
TIP 1: Use Google Maps and search for “The Cabins at Iron Mountain Resort.” If you lose service or GPS isn’t working correctly, take their main paved road all the way down until you reach the green bathhouse. Once the bathhouse is on your left, you make a right down a rock road and the cabins will be on your right.
TIP 2: Be sure to download the park trail map from their website upon arrival (or prior to arrival). It could be easy for a first timer to get lost. They also charge rescue fees if you get stuck or need to be rescued. There is a sign posted with said fees just before entering their main road into the park.
Stay Options
Iron Mountain has 28 cabins. The family cabins have a queen size bed and 2 bunk beds with twin sized “mattresses.” The bunk cabins have 3 bunk beds. Either cabin can sleep 6 people comfortably. The cabins feature beds, sheets, a picnic table, and heating/AC. You will also have access to their bathhouse. There were plenty of private showers and restrooms. The cabins are $125 per night with a 2 night stay minimum. Pets are welcome for a $25 per pet fee. Check in is after 3PM. You can book on their website.
FYI – The cabins do not have a fridge, kitchen, bathroom, etc. Literally just beds and an AC/heater with outlets.
The park also has many RV spots available. They offer 15/30/45 AMP with water and sewer hookups. Like the cabins, RV spots require a 2-night minimum stay. There is no mention of a pet fee for RV stays on their website. Further, the park also offers weekly and monthly rates for RV spots.
Be aware: Your cabin and/or RV stay does not include your parking pass (which is technically your wrist band for riding throughout your stay). Additionally, if you are arriving after 5PM, be sure to call and let them know you are arriving late as you will need a gate code, a cabin code, and shower house code.
There are so many great lookout points with mountain views! Follow the trail markers that point you into the direction of Beauty Spot and Atlanta Overlook for some of the best views in the park. If you are lucky, you will get to see wildlife! My family and I saw deer, turkey, and bunnies.
The park was busiest on Friday and Saturday. Our stay was from a Thursday to Monday and we felt like the only ones there on the weekdays. Iron Mountain Park also has several events throughout the year. They set up a haunted trail ride for Halloween each year which we hope to check out some day! Check their website for dates.
List of Items You Don’t Want to Forget!
If you’re staying in your RV, you probably have most of these items packed already! We enjoy the luxury of leaving everything in our travel trailer as well. But, for this trip, we ended up getting a cabin and were quickly reminded of the long list of things we needed to pack!
I hope I don’t have to remind you to bring drinking water, a cooler, and some clothes.. but BRING THOSE!
